How to Race?

As long as you have a working vehicle, we’ll get you racing in 4 easy steps.

  1. Become a member.
  2. Sign the waiver.
  3. Pick your class.
  4. Show up on race days.

1. become a member

Membership is the first step in helping the Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association focus on all the boring stuff (such as rental fees, insurance, a new tower, traction compound, etc.) so that you can all concentrate on the fun stuff, such as racing.

We run our races based on the International Hot Rod Association’s rules. The IHRA’s Official 2024 rulebook can be read here.

Download and fill out our application here.

2. Sign the waiver

While racing is safe, we ask that all spectators and racers sign a waiver before entering the racing grounds. The waiver is good for one season.

3. pick your class

Most of you probably already know where your car stands.

For those of you who are just starting out, here’s a breakdown of the classes to get you started. Keep in mind that your class might change over the season if your car gets modified or your race times improve.

SM | street machine

Normal daily drivers. If you drive your Grandma to church or the grocery store in your car, you probably belong in this car.

    • No engine or performance modifications.
    • No slicks or water.
    • Burnouts allowed (and encouraged).
    • Helmet recommended (though not required).
    • 1/8th mile time: 10.0 seconds or higher

Ss | Super street

If you can squeal your tires in more than one gear, and you’re known as “the friend with a heavy foot” this class might be for you.

    • Factory muscle cars such as Camaros, Corvettes, Mustangs, GTOs, Challengers, etc…
    • Minor engine or chassis performance modifications
    • Helmet recommended (though not required).
    • 1/8th mile time: 9.0 – 9.99 seconds

Sr | street rod

If you’re unsure whether you should drive your car here or trailer it and your mother won’t ride with you, you probably belong in this class.

    • Muscle cars or rods with many or major engine and chassis performance modifications.
    • Helmet required for entries running 8.59 seconds or faster.
    • 1/8th mile time: 7.5 – 8.99 seconds.

hr | hot rod

If you have a blower or nitrous, need big slicks and your friends need relaxant drugs before riding with you, welcome home.

    • Race cars or street/strip cars with major engine and chassis modifications need a roll cage at this point.
    • Helmets mandatory.
    • 1/8th mile time: 7.49 seconds or less

Exhibition

Serious race cars only, such as dragsters, funny cars or exhibition vehicles only.

motorcycle

Your 2-wheeled beasts, rockets and hogs are all welcome here.

Young racers can get some valuable track time and experience.

    • Racers aged 13-17
    • Daily drivers with zero modifications.
    • 1/8th mile times: Limited to 9 seconds or higher.

Electric (new for the 2024 season!)

You can now safely find out what Ludicrous Speed actually feels like.

    • Factory electric vehicles with zero modifications whatsoever.
    • 1/8th mile times: It’s all for fun and bragging rights.

4. show up on race days

Our racing season is 3 weekends, starting in May, with an option of 4th weekend in September in case we get rained out earlier in the summer.
